Dancer and actor Rukmini Vijayakumar is eagerly looking forward to the festive season as it has always been a source of joy for her since her childhood. On the fourth day of Navratri, associated with the color orange, she shares her thoughts on the festival, her cherished memories from her upbringing, and the significance of orange, symbolizing enthusiasm and vigor, to her. Rukmini fondly recalls her childhood experiences of setting up golu (gombe) and planting ragi seeds with her brother and cousins during Navratri. They used to compete for the best display and dolls. As a dancer, donning vibrant attire is integral to her profession, but the color orange holds a special meaning to her. She associates orange with the sun, flowers, the tint her feet would take after washing off alta (red ink), and henna stains from her younger days. Orange also evokes feelings of joy, togetherness, and festivity for her. Rukmini emphasizes that orange signifies a sense of jubilation coupled with a fierce determination to achieve great things in life. Her mother interjects, mentioning that for her, orange symbolizes knowledge. Recall of dancing Dandiya during Navratri brings back cherished memories for Rukmini, as it was among the few occasions she was permitted to venture out at night by her strict mother. Despite returning with sore feet covered in bandages after the dancing session, the joy of the celebrations remained unmatched.Rukmini reminisces about the joyful times of dancing during festivals. She notes that the concept of festivals has evolved, with fewer Dandiya nights compared to her childhood. One of her cherished memories is attending dance classes at her teacher's house during Navratri, as Vijayadashami holds particular significance for dancers. Now, she is delighted to have her own students attend her dance class on Vijayadashami, creating a special tradition for her.
